Course Reflection

This is a course I would of loved to take By Its Self! The most important thing I have learned from this course is the use of filters and the wonders that they do. Experimenting with them has helped me discover how to improve the contrasts in my images. I would of most enjoyed the self portrait assignment, had there been more time to work on it. Due to unfortunate circumstances, we did not have a dark room for a good amount of time which resulted in rushing through assignments at the end of the semester. This aspect of the course, I did not enjoy because of the fact I felt so rushed no matter how many extra hours I put in, I couldn't really focus on the quality. If I were to take this course again, I would prefer fewer assignments with longer opportunities to focus on achieving the best possible quality on all my prints. I liked the last assignment - I wish we did more collage/montage.

The Wilson Gallery - Review

I had the privilege of viewing a private gallery over the weekend in historic New Bedford. James Wilson has been an avid photographer since 1990. His own personal collection includes photographs of nature mostly. Wilson stated that he was interested mostly in taking outdoor landscape photographs. He mostly worked in B&W, but some of his sunset photos took my breath away.
All of the photos that I saw had a very good balance of items in them, they were not overcrowded and followed the rule of thirds. This may have been half the reason that I liked them. The landscapes gave great opportunity to display flowing lines of terrain and features. None of the pictures contained people, but I feel that because of the nature of the pictures, it was not required.
In my opinion, Wilson had a good eye for the mood he wanted to convey with the images. This is a desire of mine to be able to reflect to the audience what my eye sees, in both my motion picture projects as well as my still photos.

Hung out with my granddaughter Angelina. She loves our two dogs, this is daisy our border collie.

Did a lot of spring cleaning outside. Psyched flowers are coming up!

During break, i celebrated one of my best friends birthday with her. she decided it would be funny if she decorated herself and me with the bows from her presents. haha :) . we had fun.

My friend got a new bunny for her birthday...the bunny is really cute. In the picture she is in the bath tub cleaning herself before we put her in her new cage. :)

hello everybody, I came across this artist during vacation while i was checking out some of my e-mail. lol. Please check him out in the web cite i added in, he draws on sidewalks with chalk, but there 3-D, soo cool looking. http://users.skynet.be/J.Beever/pave.htm .
The angle they take the picture really makes it look 3-D. One peice he has done looks like a hole and people actually walk around it lol. This one i added in is one of my favorites.

Uno, Dos, Tres Rolls Developed!

Hello everyone,
i spent my Friday morning and afternoon cleaning and setting up the darkroom. The tiles have been removed and paint applied in its place. I also had the opportunity to develop 3 rolls of film AGFA 400 (1 roll) and TMAX 100 both "P" developing class films. Lucky me!!! I used the tall film holder and it worked well, all my pics came out great! (IMHO) that is.. I made two contac sheets as one roll required more drying. Although i did not find the photoflo, it worked well anyhow. I also developed 2 negatives. I printed them on Pearl photopaper (matte) which made them look better than the glossy, i must say. but again (IMHO). As soon as i get them scanned i will post them, next week possibly. I also found out something i didn't know before, Those speed frames, the paper loads from the end where the half moon cutout is!!!!! I always tried to slide it across!!! DOH! Oh well hope everyone is having a good break!

Week 1 ~ SPRING BEAK Photos

This week I Hung Out With Mr. Beak ("Manny") [Left]

On March 4th ('The only day of the year that's also a command!) I took my Fiancee, Alicia to the Wang Theatre to see Jerry Seinfeld [Right]

The show was good, i had the first good laugh all year.! We had seats in section Z in the left balcony. I found out what happens when it takes 4 hours to get through to the ticketing agent. I had to use a roll of toilet paper to stop the blood from coming out of my nose. It was also a little uncomfortable having to crouch down so as not to scrape your head on the ceiling.

Okay Say Cheese!!!...For 60 seconds! =)

Are two heads are better than one? Everyone should post their class portraits asasp. You are also expected to post at least two photos during break illustrating what you did on your spring break, update your blogs, and write your two page photo review. Have a great break. I just got word that the regular dark room will be available to you 24/7 starting 3-9-06.

Coongrats Bryan, your pinhole camera is working quite well as evidenced by your self portrait. Not bad for such low tech methods. I took the liberty of scanning the paper negative into photoshop and inverting the image to see the positive results. Let's see what else we can all do by mixing high and low technologies.

To summarize what we talked about in class today: It was announced that we will not have our analog darkroom back until after Spring break, Monday, March 20. Therefore I have decided we will design and construct our own pinhole cameras on Monday, the 27th. Please bring a suitable container for your camera to class and visit www.pinhole.com to research the subject. You also need to find a pinhole photographer whose work you admire. Be ready to share this photographer and their work with the rest of the class through a posting on your blog. (try to post an image as well.) On Wednesday March 1, we will test them out by completing an assignment to be announced. On Friday, March 3 we review and critique the pinhole assignment and take a short quiz on everything we have covered the first half of the semester. At this point, all blog assignments should be completed and posted for review. A mid term grade will be assigned based on both the content of your blog and the content of your portfolio on Friday. All comments and questions are welcome.

Please do the two short writing assignments, create your own blog on blogger and photo hosting page on www.Flickr.com . Re shoot that first assignment in digital if possible and post the best three of both sets. We will take a look at the results and talk about the differences, etc. We will not be meeting Tuesday as originally planned but I will be checking blogs. Make sure you are linked to the class site or email me your URL. We will all meet on Wednesday, with plenty of images to talk about and view. We might even have our darkroom back by then. This is a reminder that we will be meeting in the art building again. Please bring notebook computers if you have them. Your assignment for today will be to take a good look at the current photo exhibition now on display in the Anderson gallery (work by BSC professor, Dr. Beatrice St.Laurant) and write a short (500 - 1000 word) reaction to the show and post it on your photo blog. You should provide your readers with an overall view, and then describe both the photo that is your favorite and the photo that you feel is the strongest overall. (why?) They could be one in the same but they do not have to be. Use the terms we discussed in class to build your case. If possible, post a photo or two with your text. Assignment number two: Surf Flickr find a FlickrPro member whose work you admire and tell us about them on the community bscphoto1 blog site. This is due by monday, 2-20.
